HBO Renews The Wire By John M. Higgins -- Broadcasting & Cable, 9/12/2006 7:10:00 PM
Balancing small audiences again critical acclaim, HBO has picked up a fifth season of drama The Wire. The network will commission an additional 13 episodes of the amazingly gritty "police versus drug dealers" drama, but the expected air date could not be learned.
The decision came just two days after the debut of the fourth season, which drew only 1.5 million viewers. That was up a bit from the premiere of the previous season, but just a fraction of the four million viewers averaged by a new episode of Deadwood or the 9 million drawn by an episode of The Sopranos. All those numbers increase through repeat viewing on the network and—importantly—through video-on-demand services, but cable operators won't make VOD numbers available for nearly a month.
Created by former Baltimore Sun reporter David Simon, of Homicide fame, The Wire paints an intensely bleak and textured portrait of urban Baltimore, with its internecine battles among cops, politicos and drug dealers. The show takes its largely black cast on a dozen parallel plotlines, demanding a far greater level of commitment and attention from its audience than standard escapist police procedurals, which limits its audience appeal.
The current season dives into the public-school system, putting a harsh spotlight on teachers trying to cope with educating drug-dealing "corner boys." In a recent interview, Simon said he pitched HBO execs about taking the next season into the media, focusing on how local newspapers and TV stations play uncomfortable roles in the twisted politics of big cities.
Let the rejoicing begin!

I simply don't understand why more people do not watch this show. It is far and away the best written and acted show on TV. I wasn't a huge fan of the second season, but it was ok, the other seasons have been unbelievably good though.
I just don't get it.

Does anyone know when the last season is going to air. I'm anxious and there is no news on a date.

why people don't watch? Because its hard to follow, lord knows what the blacks are saying half the time. And many of the drug dealers are glorified - while the police and the system is corrupt and is the root of the problem. The behavior of the animals is "justified" because the cages aren't kept clean.

im so pleased that thier making another season yes its hard to follow but that makes it more interesting imo as all the other fictional police series ect are just so boreing and not true to life, life on the street is complicated how can it be simplified? it wouldnt do it justice and thats the apeal of the wire im no young hood rat more of somebody that came up in that and managed to make it to middle age without life in a cage i witnessed alot and i have to say its the beleivability of it all and the bang on scripting the plots with exeption to omar as he wouldnt last a month doing that but all the same an awesome character, the wire without douhbt is the best thing to hit the screen in decades you think of all the big films of the 80,s and 90,s on the same theme they dont come close im just sad that it took so long to make such a brilliant series i have watched all seasons upto now and have brought all seasons on dvd to keep as i know nothing will ever come close to this again the wire is truelly special anyone i speak to about the wire says the same its only your simpletons that cant follow it that try to rubbish it FOOLS for the wire is gold. peace

If a french like me can understand the blacks in the wire, you must have a lot of cognition problems to be unable, being a yankee...
And the show don't depict the police as corrupt, but the system itself, aka america...
By the way, it's a great show wrote by both an ex chief policeman and a journalist, you moron.

Its a crime against humanity that the new season is only 10 episodes long. You idiot viewers that rather watch desperate housewives or greys anatomy, are exactly whats wrong with the world

Best show on TV ever. It's a metaphor for Iraq and a Dickensian view of modern Baltimore.A must see for anyone interested in the culture of the US.
